Description
Mount Saver is our original product by the Mount Medix Company. This product has been featured in the NRA’s American Hunter and is used to treat many taxidermy collections including the SCI Museum in Tucson Arizona. The Mount Medix products are used by Ty’s Taxidermy and are the products referred to in the YouTube video “Moths ALMOST took over, here’s what we did” by Lee and Tiffany Lakosky. Mount Saver specifically used to rid mounts of damaging insects. Mount Saver will kill moths and dermistids in all forms of their lifecycle, including the eggs. This product is a taxidermy product specifically designed for this purpose. Unlike household or commercial pesticides that are not intended for use in taxidermy and which do a poor job of dealing with insects because they do not kill the eggs resulting in the return of the insects in a couple months. Also because household pesticides are not designed for taxidermy, the residue they leave behind will often yellow and discolor the hair and mounts over time. The Mount Medix active in Mount Saver is a licensed proprietary blend of essential oils not a harsh synthetic chemical. This active is only available to the taxidermy industry through Mount Medix products. Mount Saver and other Mount Medix products are available worldwide, in Europe go to www.mountmedix.eu and in Africa contact Mount Medix Africa located in White River, South Africa.
What to Look For:
If you notice loose hair, moths flying around, fine sand like material under you mounts, you may have insect infestation. Have a closer look and spread the hair to look for cobweb like silks in the hair, cut channels in the hair where insects have feed, tiny tan sand like fecal material especially on wall contact surfaces, tuck slots, around ears, antlers and horn, and on paws and around hooves.
Applications:
Professional or Client Use – If using more than 4 fl. ounce of this product, do so in a well ventilated outside area away from living space. Start by vacuuming or removing loose debris with compressed air. Mount Saver is applied directly to the mount in a thorough soaking. If possible, its beneficial to turn the mount upside down so the product runs along the hair into the hide, instead of along the hair onto the ground. Keep in mind Mount Saver must get to the interface of the hair and hide at the follicle. This is where the insects live. Special attention also needs to be giving to tuck slots, brisket areas, around ears, horns and antlers, areas of the mount contacting the wall. In cases of severe infestation, it can be beneficial to wrap the mount in plastic or place in a plastic bag for 2-8 hours.
After, letting stand it can be beneficial to remove excessive solution with a wet vacuum. After this let air dry for a week or so, or more preferably use forced hot air drying. As the mount dries, grooming will likely be necessary.
Available sizes and usage:
The Mount Medix Mount Protector is available in 16 fl. ounce, 32 fl. ounce bottles and 128 fl. ounce ready to use sizes with accompanying sprayer, as well as 16 fl. ounce, 32 fl. ounce and 128 fl. ounce concentrate. Typical product used is about 6-8 ounces of Ready-To-Use for a whitetail shoulder mount. Mount Saver is typically used on mounts with hair. For those mounts that are delicate, have fine hair or feathers we recommend the use of ProAd.
Additional Uses:
Because of the composition of the Mount Saver product, it makes an excellent taxidermy cleaner in cases of smoke and soot damage. For these deep cleaning needs use the Mount Saver just like a shampoo, by thoroughly soaking the mount, let stand for an hour and rinse with clean water. Mount Saver has also been very successful at removing mold from mounts after flooding or storage in moist conditions. Many mounts along the Gulf coast have been saved after hurricane and tropical storm flooding by cleaning them with Mount Saver.
